Hands-On Approaches to Climate-Smart Forestry

The Climate-Smart Forestry Workshop, held in Wageningen, brought together experts from across Europe to share research insights and foster collaboration within the CSF Network.

On October 20–24, the Sustainable Forest Ecosystems team at Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR) hosted a Climate-Smart Forestry (CSF) Workshop in Wageningen. The event was co-organised by the European Forest Institute (EFI) and supported by the ForestPaths, FORWARDS, and HoliSoils projects, as part of the CSF Network coordinated by WENR.

The workshop gathered 24 participants from 12 European countries, representing 16 institutions. Throughout the week, participants exchanged knowledge and research findings on CSF-related field experiments, forest and landscape modelling, and national CSF research activities.

The programme also included excursions to ongoing CSF experiments in Dutch forests and hands-on sessions introducing EFISCEN-Space – a modelling tool used to analyse forest resource projections, including sustainable management regimes and wood production potential. EFISCEN-Space is applied across all three supporting projects: ForestPaths, FORWARDS, and HoliSoils.

The workshop concluded with participants and organisers expressing a strong interest in continuing collaboration within the CSF Network and in further developing its activities.
