Climate Smart Forestry

The term ‘Climate Smart Forestry‘ (CSF) was first introduced in Nabuurs et al. (2015), in which a more innovative and integrated approach to mitigating, adapting to and maintaining the productivity of Europe’s forests was presented on a local scale. This was in response to the usual global approach to forest mitigation measures, which only addressed afforestation, reforestation and deforestation.

CSF firmly integrates climate objectives into the forestry framework, building upon three main objectives:

  1. reducing and/or removing greenhouse gas emissions;
  2. adapting to and building resilience to climate change, and
  3. sustainably increasing regionally specific forest productivity and incomes.

To learn about CSF and exchange views and experiences, Wageningen University & Research, together with the European Forest Institute (EFI), established a research network comprising 26 partner institutes. One of the aims is to share experiences of pilots in the field. This page displays some of these pilots.
