New Call for Grants on Forest Restoration

FORWARDS call G-07-2025: Establishing Climate-Smart Forestry and forest restoration pilots in Europe with citizen and stakeholder engagement is now open for proposals.

The call has two main objectives:

  1. Establishing Field Trials and Evidence Generation: Set up field trials across Europe to test forest management and restoration practices, providing evidence for effective CSF and restoration strategies in climate change mitigation, adaptation, and biodiversity enhancement.
  1. Engaging Citizens and Stakeholders: Promote the active involvement of citizens and stakeholders in advancing CSF and restoration efforts, raising awareness, assessing social impacts, and empowering local communities to co-create and contribute to CSF decision-making and policy development.

Deadline: 1 February 2026.

Forests play a crucial role in absorbing CO₂ from the atmosphere — but this capacity cannot be taken for granted. A new study published in Functional Ecology (Etzold et al., 2026) draws on 30 years of continuous forest monitoring at 18 sites across Switzerland, spanning elevations from lowland forests at 500 m up to mountain forests near the treeline at almost 1,900 m. The result is one of the most comprehensive long-term assessments of how climate change is affecting forest growth in Central Europe.
